The Edible Hut is a community gathering space with a living, edible roof and oculus to the sky in Calimera Park on the eastside of Detroit. It is an enchanting, pavilion-like structure made from a reconfigured Detroit garage with a roof of edible perennial plants such as thyme, oregano, lavender, and sage. After two years of incredible collaborative work by residents, organizations, artists, and schools, the hut is here!
The Edible Hut is a space for positive, creative activity in the Osborn neighborhood. It is a space for performances such as spoken-word, hip-hop and jazz, for meetings and outdoor classes, for growing healthy food and enjoying the art of cooking. It is a space for working together to cultivate a transforming energy and overall sense of well-being in the neighborhood.
This summer, the Friends of Calimera Park are hosting a series of summer activities in the Edible Hut.
August 17th – Jazz by Keith Gamble Quartet, soulful rock by Mile High, healthy food by Goodwells, and homemade ice cream making with herbs from the roof
August 24th - Project dedication ceremony and party with Odu Afrobeat Orchestra, African drumming and dancing, edible painting, workshop on edible perennial plants and healthy food by Goodwells
September 14th – Storytelling and pizzamaking with herbs from the roof
September 21st – Talent show and neighborhood recipe cooking
All events are from 3-6pm in Calimera Park at the intersection of Joann and Pinewood. If you live nearby, we'd love to have you join us in the park. For more details, visit www.ediblehutdetroit.com and join our Facebook page at www.facebook.com/EdibleHut.
The long-term care fund for the Edible Hut will ensure that the space is organized and cared for in the years to come. The sustainability of the project is essential to its success! The fund will help purchase and maintain gardening tools for the roof and grounds, storage for tools/lawn mower/cistern/tables/chairs, motion-censored lighting, monthly electricity bills, watering and re-painting supplies, seasonal event supplies, porta-potty rental fees and overall grounds cultivation.
It's our goal to start by raising $7,500 for the long-term care of the Edible Hut through donations by individuals who believe in the project and want to be a part of its impact and future. We would be incredibly grateful to have your support! In exchange for your donation, we would like to give you something that shares the artistic energy of the Edible Hut. If you need your donation to be tax-deductible, please contact us directly at firstname.lastname@example.org. We're also appreciative of any other ways you may want to support the project - time, tools, organizing, etc. We hope that the Edible Hut makes you feel hopeful, that you think it’s a meaningful and pleasurable way to gather together, and that you’d like to share in it with us by supporting its long-term care.
