About Detroit Disc Golf
By the end of July, 2013, we will have installed 18 Discraft Chainstar baskets on Belle Isle. We've been working on this project for two years now. It started with our inaugural Battle at The Belle in 2011 with hundreds of participants and spectators and great support from the city. 2012 was spent rehabilitating the former 32 acre ball golf course into a world class disc golf course in time for the second annual BATB. Despite being hit by the outskirts of Hurricane Sandy, several hundred people once again flooded the course for a three day festival of disc golf, music, and camping.
This spring, we finally received the final approval from the park to begin installing baskets. Almost immediately, the Michigan Disc Golf Association gave us our first 3 Chainstars to plant. Soon after, an anonymous donor came through with 16 more to complete the course.
Why We Are Here
Although we will have a fully functioning course by August 1st, there is still a great deal of work to do. Tee pads need to be installed and the grounds need to be kept up. In addition to this, there is a great deal of TLC that needs to be given to the grounds since the course had been abandoned for several years before we came along. For instance, we have 32 acres of land and mowing alone costs over $1000 each time! If we want to keep it clean we will need to do this monthly, for now though, unfortunately we have to be very selective. Along with this we will be repairing fences, securing buildings, taking out dead trees, and fixing up a beautiful covered bridge on site that will better the experience for the community.
How You Can Help D.D.G.
We do not receive any financial support from the park or the city, so as you can tell, it is very costly for the D.D.G. to keep up with being the best that it can be & still available to you, the community. With your support, we can have a lasting impression on the outcome of the course overall and the confidence that it can be maintained for months to come.
Cheers and a big thanks. It has been a pleasure for all of us that have been involved in this project and most importantly, being able get come this far with our dreams of having a disc golf course available for you to enjoy.
