CHINATOWN NEEDS YOU

Boston Chinatown Neighborhood Center (BCNC) is using the arts to activate Chinatown!  BCNC, with the help of community members and partners, is working to preserve the cultural assets of our neighbors and families while revitalizing underused space in Chinatown with the One Chinatown Arts Center (1CAC). As Chinatown's first community-driven arts center, 1CAC will leverage the artistic and creative resources in Chinatown to build and support a community which has lost much of its identity.

1CAC programming is slated to launch in the Spring of 2017 and features:

  • An artist-in-residence program that supports an artist trained in a traditional/folk Chinese art form to engage community members in the creation of public art each year
  • Cultural series including film screenings, performances arts exhibitions & workshops, lectures and visiting artists
  • A collaborative workspace for local artists to leverage community assets benefiting Chinatown and the region
  • Below-market rate rehearsal space for local community organizations
  • Classes focusing on Chinese arts and culture for youth and adults

1CAC will provide access to unique cultural experiences, highlighting how this vibrant neighborhood continues to contribute to the life and identity of Boston.

Wait, so what’s “1CAC?”

At its heart, 1CAC is a “Creative Placemaking” project. Creative Placemaking is an evolving field of practice that employs “arts, culture and creativity to serve a community’s interest while driving change, growth and transformation that also builds quality of place.” Centrally located in a 5,000 square foot space on the ground floor of the new One Greenway residential complex, 1CAC offers a place to convene, create and enjoy art, as well as leverage neighborhood cultural assets. Through these efforts, 1CAC will recreate the tangible sense of place in Chinatown that has been so diluted in recent years.

1CAC includes rehearsal space for local arts groups at below-market rates, increasing artistic production and access to arts resources in the City of Boston.

Strategically located at the end of Boston's Greenway and abutting the South End, 1CAC will act as a bridge between the "old" and "new" Chinatowns, bringing residents together to build a communal neighborhood identity.

Here’s where you come in!

We’ve signed the lease, found fantastic community partners and funders, and have broken ground, but we still need your help.  BCNC already has raised $900,000 to cover some of the costs of construction, but BCNC still needs to equip 1CAC with the latest resources and tools to leverage the wealth of cultural and creative assets in our community.

Here’s where YOU come in--MassDevelopment is offering matching funds if we can raise $50,000 from our supporters. That means $100,000 to make 1CAC the amazing neighborhood asset we know it can be. With your help, we know we can reach this goal. Just think, if you donate $100, your gift will be doubled, and when YOU SHARE this crowdfunding campaign with your friends, co-workers and family, you’re making the ripples that will lead to a sea change in Boston’s Chinatown.

Below are just a few of the ways you can get involved in 1CAC:

You can make your gift to 1CAC online through this website, or make a gift by check. If making a gift by check, please make the check out to BCNC and include the words "Patronicity 1CAC" on the memo line. Please mail checks to the following address:

Why Chinatown, Why Now?

66 Hudson Street, the site of 1CAC, has a central role in the story of Boston’s Chinatown. In the early 1960’s, during a period now referred to as “Urban Renewal,” 66 Hudson Street (known to developers and urban planners as “Parcel 24”) was home to over 200 Chinese families. Some of these families were new immigrants, and some were the children and grandchildren of the first Chinese workers who settled in Boston’s Chinatown in the 1870’s. Urban planners, deep in the throes of automobile mania, opted to demolish hundreds of houses in order to make way for the on-ramps to I-90 and I-93. In the process of displacing hundreds of working-class families, the Boston Redevelopment Authority also demolished Chinatown’s only library, which was never rebuilt. The experience left many in Chinatown disillusioned and angry as their neighbors, friends and family members lost their homes to make way for a project  benefiting commuters from the suburbs while offering little but pollution and displacement to the neighborhood it most affected.

In 2006, Parcel 24 was made available for community redevelopment, and One Greenway, a mixed-income residential complex with many affordable units, was built on the site. In addition to affordable housing, One Greenway included a 5,050 square foot community space at below-market rent. Seizing on this opportunity, BCNC began working with One Greenway to create 1CAC.

Slated to open in 2017, 1CAC is the culmination of over 50 years of Chinatown's history. Located on the same site that was wrested from the hands of Chinatown residents in the 1960’s, 1CAC will be a third space for a community that for too long has been confined to apartments and a smattering of restaurants and small parks hemmed in by highways. Providing resources, educational opportunities and arts programming to all, 1CAC is a site in which to counter the feeling of disbelonging so many Chinatown residents feel while bringing together the “old” and “new” Chinatowns to create both art and a newfound sense of place for this diverse neighborhood.
