Help us build the Point West Art and Trail on Lansing's West Side!

Situated on the west side of the City of Lansing are two lovely parks: Dunnebacke Park and West Side Park. Dunnebacke Park is home to a pavilion, playground, the Old Oakland Community Garden, and an urban wetland. Just next door, West Side Park is home to Lansing Community College's baseball field, a horseshoe playing area, concession center, and a large grassy expanse with established maple, pine, and apple trees.

Sadly, there’s not even a sidewalk along Stanley Street to get you into either of these parks. Imagine if there was a 1-mile multi-use, recreational trail that would provide new opportunities for physical activity to enjoy all that both parks have to offer?

Just to the south of these two parks is a triangular plot of land between Saginaw Street and Oakland Avenue. We call it the Point. It’s right at the city limits, which means it could be a gateway into Michigan’s Capital City. But right now, it’s just a mound of grass.

What if we changed that, and instead, a public art installation welcomed you to Lansing? And what if it included a safer crossing over Saginaw and Oakland, including a safe connection to the Saginaw Street bike lane?

Together, these two projects could transform Lansing’s west side. They'd connect several vibrant neighborhoods, including the historic Westside, Old Oakland, Genesee, and Downtown neighborhoods. They’d create a gateway into the City of Lansing at the western entry point on Saginaw Street, and they'd give people reasons to get physically active.

Note: the art shown in the above rendering is entirely conceptual and does not necessarily reflect what will actually be built.

THE IMPACT

Here is the essentials of what your donation will fund:

  • An engaging gateway to Lansing
  • Public art that showcases local talent and calm traffic on M-43
  • A new one-mile long , safe, multi use trail
  • Landscaping, benches, public gardens, physical-fitness stations, and informational signs for the trail
  • Improved access to fitness and recreation
  • Connecting neighborhoods of the westside to surrounding business and greater Lansing

IF we succeed in meeting our goal of $13,000  MEDC and MSHDA will match our funds! This means your donation will be DOUBLED.

The potential for future recreation and development around this project is endless. Perhaps eventually they'd connect to a larger west side trail through the RACER Trust property, one can dream! The Saginaw Oakland Commercial Association (SOCA), Old Oakland Neighborhood Association (OONA), and the Westside Neighborhood Association (WNA) have teamed up to combine these two projects: SOCA’s Point Public Art Project, and OONA’s recreational trail project.

To date, SOCA, OONA, and WNA have raised $24,000 of the estimated $238,000 of the total project costs. They are collaboratively pursuing several other grant and funding opportunities to bring this project to completion. Groundbreaking on the project is expected in spring of 2016.
