Cracker Barrel Alley- A Missed Opportunity

With numerous great restaurants and shops in the downtown, theres very little space to sit and enjoy the downtown experience beyond a simple walk down the street.  Enter, the Cracker Barrel Alley pedestrian experience.  The Alley creates a major danger for pedestrians on Main Street, provides an unsafe vehicle shortcut, and serves a duplicate purpose for vehicle access on neighboring Masonic Street.  Converting an alley that rarely sees any use beyond a few passing cars into a space for community gathering will reinvigorate Downtown Northampton and create a sense of place and safety in the heart of Downtown.

Tomorrow - an intimate outdoor living room

The nearby Pulaski Park is an amazing experience.  But sometimes you want to grab your coffee, relax in a more intimate setting, and be closer to coffee shops, stores, and shade... That's where the Cracker Barrell Alley pedestrian plaza comes in!

Transforming Main Street

Imagine one less driveway to cross as you're walking down the Main Street sidewalks.  Imagine the City Hall crosswalk not being on the most dangerous blind curve on Main Street but lining up directly with Cracker Barrel Alley.  Imagine a crosswalk in the epicenter of the densest concentration of coffee and tea shops in the city (and perhaps anywhere in the state west of Boston).

First Cracker Barrel Alley and then next year we test a City Hall Parklet. Eventually we repair Main Street to be even more friendly to walking and biking, while retaining its ability to move and park cars.

How We'll Do It

Repeat as needed. Welcome to the Northampton Pavement to Parks program!

The Process

Smith College students and community members will collaborate on design while a temporary installation is in place in the Alley for the fall of 2016.  During the winter months of 2016-17, the community will work hand in hand with Northampton Officials, and Smith College design students to finalize the design of the space and we'll be ready to build in the Spring of 2017. We want COMMUNITY INPUT and a space that EVOLVES over time to meet changing needs of our diverse population.

Here's where YOU come in...

Contribute through Patronicity or directly to the City of Northampton (Contact WFeiden@NorthamptonMA.gov or Jonathan@Patronicity.com with any questions). Invite all your friends and colleagues. All donations will be listed in our celebration.  Donations over $500 will be recorded in a SPECIAL park feature.

OUR STRETCH GOAL...

Northampton began its Cracker Barrel Alley project with plans for a basic parklet: seats, tables, and some greenery.  Because of the incredible support we've received in the early days of the campaign, we developed a plan for what to do with funds over our $10,000 goal!!! This could include: swinging the curb cut from City Hall to line up with the alley, higher quality seating, tables, and greenery. The better we do the better park we can afford.  The sky is the limit but it all depends on how much support we receive from YOU!

Our Story So Far

This past summer, we tested out temporary parklets on both sides of Main Street by City Hall in Cracker Barrel Alley.  Visitors LOVED it and gave us HUNDREDS of comments on how to move forward.  This fall we will be placing a temporary parklet on Main Street for three months, to close Cracker Barrel Alley and engage the community.  While this is up, we will work with students at Smith College and the community to complete the full and FINAL design.  By the time our fundraising is over, we will be ready to move forward and build the NEW Cracker Barrel Alley.
