A Village With A Vision

Nearly 135 years ago, Vicksburg began with a dream by John Vickers and his single grist mill. Today, the Village has grown to be a dynamic community that continually drives forward, embraces its citizens, and offers a welcoming, friendly experience for visitors. It’s time to continue moving Vicksburg toward the future, while embracing our heritage and family oriented values.  The second project for the community vision, Liberty Lane East,  is part of the Vicksburg Downtown Development (DDA) Placemaking effort.  This effort began with a public visioning session, where the community strongly expressed its desire to have a downtown district that embraces its rich heritage by showcasing boutique shops in historic storefronts, and offering dynamic dining, event and entertainment experiences.   Liberty Lane will turn a dark, rundown alley into a vibrant Victorian garden path offering a pedestrian only passage connecting the S. Kalamazoo St. and S. Main St. shopping and dining  areas.  Implementation of this $135,500 piece of the plan is being funded through the Vicksburg Vision Capital Campaign which will be used to leverage matching grant dollars.

Liberty Lane East

A large thank you to all our past donors on the success of the Vicksburg Nature Trailhead Crowd funding project and on the campaign to renovate the Village of Vicksburg.  We continue our ambitious effort to redevelop the downtown and continue building the Vicksburg legacy for future generations with this next project, Liberty Lane East.  This six-foot wide Victorian Garden Path will be reminiscent of a "European Street" to compliment the1880's Italianate architecture of the downtown buildings.  This  path converts the west end of an old alley that runs between S. Kalamazoo St. and S. Main St. into a pedestrian friendly walkway between these two shopping areas.  Liberty Lane will unify these two shopping and dining areas into one cohesive downtown district, and will also provide a scenic gateway to the parking area located along S. Kalamazoo St.  The new garden path and courtyard will offer outdoor seating in a lush shaded area to enjoy the outdoors or relax after a busy day of working or shopping.  Your donations towards this effort will:

  • Demolition of the current asphalt drive
  • Installation of a six foot stenciled brick winding walkway
  • Creation of murals on the walls
  • Construction of iron entrance arches on both Liberty Lane East and West
  • Planting of decorative trees, flowers and planters
  • Installation of benches, café tables, bicycle racks, and lighting
  • Creation of a courtyard space for gathering
  • Installation of a themed garden sculpture

To reach the goal of $50,000 to complete the Liberty Lane East project, we are asking for your help to make a gift to this Campaign.  IF we reach our goal of raising $50,000, your donation will be DOUBLED by the MEDC and MSHDA matching grant program Public Spaces, Community Places. We have $35,000 of the total $135,000 raised already and now we need your help to unlock and complete our funding!! This is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to dramatically enhance the Village and make your mark in Vicksburg’s history.  We have taken your dreams for the future and put them in a plan to make them a reality in the future.

The Impact

Liberty Lane East will not only create a beautiful pedestrian transition unifying two shopping areas, but will also provide a safe pedestrian only path, cleaning up a dark, run down alley into a vibrant area for social gatherings, or to just rest after a day of working or shopping.

This initiative is part of the Vicksburg DDA placement strategy to redevelop the Vicksburg downtown district to enhance its economic development efforts. Liberty Lane is planned to begin its transformation in early spring with the demolition of the old cracked asphalt, then site preparation and construction for completion in time for the Memorial Day parade.
