We are building a professional skatepark in Houghton, Michigan

According to the most recent census, there are eight million skateboarders nationwide outranking hockey, skiing, and even little league baseball. Despite these massive numbers, there is not a sanctioned place to skate in Houghton or neighboring Hancock despite our demand for one. In fact, the nearest proper concrete skatepark, the only one in the entire Upper Peninsula of Michigan, is a two-hour drive away in Marquette. We’d like to join thousands of U.S. communities in providing a safe and satisfying spot for local skaters and bikers to practice this healthy and communal activity.

Houghton MI Skatepark

With enthusiastic support from the city and its neighbors, the Houghton MI Skatepark group has raised approximately $45,000 in cash and in-kind support from local businesses. Notable accolades include $10,000 from the highly competitive Tony Hawk Foundation grant, and nearly $10,000 raised from a single art show.

While Houghton and the Upper Peninsula as a whole is not a wealthy area, its small population makes for a tight-knit community of diverse skills and backgrounds that bands together on projects such as these.

Together with your help we will be able to create:

  • Professional design and construction from world-class skatepark contractors.
  • An aesthetic addition to a waterfront promenade. The skatepark will be located in the East Houghton Waterfront Park .
  • A safe gathering space and catalyst to a budding youth community.

Building a community space for a diverse user group and underserved youth

Skateboarding and BMX’s low barriers of entry allow for a diverse user group of all ages, income, and ethnic backgrounds. Similarly, its ethos as an independent and creative sport bolsters an opportunity for physical activity and social interaction among teens that typically don’t participate in team sports.

As a natural gathering space, skateparks offer an opportunity for these underserved teens to build a community outside of their immediate circle. As the second concrete skatepark in the entire Upper Peninsula, we expect daily users from over a 50-mile radius. Additionally, the facility will offer a venue for occasional instructional programs, to which our local skateshop has committed to assisting.

IF you help us meet our goal, your donation will essentially be DOUBLED by the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC). Houghton MI Skatepark is a fund under the Keweenaw Community Foundation and your donations are tax-deductible.

Please donate on this page and share it with friends and family, or mail/drop your donation in person at address 236 Quincy Street, Hancock, MI 49930. Write checks to Keweenaw Community Foundation and write "Skatepark" in memo.
