Alan E. Rich Environmental Park Improvements and Handicapped Dock Installation

The Town of Athol has joined with the Millers River Watershed Council (MRWC) and the Friends of the Alan E. Rich Environmental Park in purchasing and installing an accessible canoe/kayak dock on the Millers River in Athol.

The dock in Athol will compliment the dock in Orange improving access to the 6-mile Millers River Blue Trail connecting the economic centers of downtown Orange to downtown Athol.  Just think... a short paddle down the Millers River will allow residents and visitors alike access to both communities downtowns and the restaurants, breweries, stories and other businesses that make up each town's economic hearts.

The Project

The Town of Athol has received a Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) trails grant in the amount of $26,379.  However we are still short of our goal to purchase the handicap dock.

The Dock has been fully permitted by the Athol Conservation Commission and the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection and we are ready to proceed with the construction and installation of the dock this Spring of 2017 as long as we can close the funding gap through this program.

In addition to the installation of the dock, we want to enhance other aspects in and around Alen E. Rich Environmental Park including;

  • Installing wayfinding signage directing visitors who come to the site by water to restaurants and businesses a short walk away in downtown.
  • Designing a small mural for the entry way to the Alan E. Rich Environmental Park paying homage to the beauty of the Millers River and it's historical importance to the region.
  • Adding new seating elements for boaters and visitors to the downtown to sit and enjoy the River from the banks.
  • Commission local craftsmen to design and build a canoe/kayak rack so that canoeists/kayakers have a safe place to store their boats while visiting Downtown Athol.

Why it Matters

The Millers River has provided residents and visitors endless opportunities for recreational activities on and around the water.  Today, we look to make this access easier for everyone, including those who may have mobility impairments with this EZ Dock installation.  The dock and park improvements will provide opportunity for all residents and visitors to access the water and paddled the Millers River and it's tributaries.

This EZ Dock will compliment a similar dock in Orange improving access to the 6-mile Millers River Blue Trail connecting the economic centers of Orange and Athol.   Your donation will help make this unique accessible stretch of river waters available to residents of full mobility and limited mobility alike.  The North Quabbin Region is promoting tourism available to all and the impact of your donation will make this goal a reality!

How YOU can help give access to ALL to the Millers River

Because of the support of the MassDevelopment's "Commonwealth Places" Program, the Town of Athol will unlock a matching grant of $5,000 if this campaign reaches its goal by the deadline of midnight on April 20th, 2017. That means your dollars will go twice as far and your support means twice as much when you provide your donation to help our accessible dock project reach its final finish line!

Beyond donations, PLEASE HELP SPREAD THE WORD... tell your family, your friends, your neighbors, those who love paddling or those who just love ATHOL.  Share through social media, email networks or just tell your friends when you see them on the street, or in the grocery store.

Donate offline send a check in any amount to Millers River Watershed Council "MRWC" with Accessible dock in memo line to MRWC 100 MainStreet Athol Ma 01331

Any amount is welcome and we will highlight those who make donations on a plaque that is planned for installation at the Alan E. Rich Environmental Park Parking Lot greeting guests and visitors to the downtown and watershed area.
