With the matching funds ($50,000), our project has exceeded $100,000 raised and is on our way to our total need of $255,000 (Financial goal to install all). Our goal through this site (Patronicity) is to raise $80,000 to give the project $130,000 with the state match.  It is critical that we hit this goal so please donate what you can to this 501c-3 non profit and tax deductible project. 100% of all donations will DIRECTLY support Beyond Walls implementation!

Please continue to support and share the link to this page. We desperately need to have raised $80,000 via this site before our campaign ends on May 22nd.  THANK YOU!

ABOUT:

Beyond Walls is a group of Lynn residents, business owners, and public art/placemaking enthusiasts using grass roots efforts to create a sense of place and safety in the heart of Downtown Lynn. Lynn’s residents and business owners have cited both walkability and safety as key areas of concern for Lynn. This project addresses both of these issues through a multi-faceted installation of public art and lighting.

The Vision

Beyond Walls wants to build on the vibrancy of Downtown Lynn. Our goal is to ensure Lynn is a hub, buzzing with energy, enterprise, arts and culture. It is important to us that it also retains the voice, integrity, and pride of its residents while attracting visitors from near and far.

After many community meetings and surveys, we heard Lynners loud and clear. Now is the time for us to take action and make Lynners' requests for Downtown Lynn a reality. Out of the top priorities, we have focused on three of the most desired items: lighting under the elevated MBTA tracks, illuminated sidewalks, and the creation of large-scale public art in and around Lynn’s Downtown.

Project Components will include the following:

  • Dynamic LED underpass lighting from Payette and LAM Partners. This lighting will connect Central Square and Washington Street to create a safe and inviting passageway through the heart of Central Square.

  • Twelve large-scale vintage neon art pieces will illuminate Lynn’s downtown, specifically the downtown business district which will increase foot traffic and commerce.

  • Ten murals commissioned and painted by international and local recognized artists who reflect the cultural makeup of Lynn.

  • A sculpture located in downtown Lynn paying homage to Lynn's rich industrial history as the home of America's jet engine technology.

We want to use this project as an opportunity to elevate Lynn. We believe our creative activities will foster a more livable, safe, economically viable, sustainable, and equitable community.

Why Now?

Lynn, we hear your urgency. Safety has been cited as a prime concern by the local business community and residents. Partially based on a lack of lighting, areas of downtown Lynn have higher levels of criminal activity and motor vehicle-pedestrian collisions. Increasing the walkability of Downtown (both during the day and at night) is of critical importance.

Lynn also has a burgeoning cultural district (a designation bestowed on Lynn’s Downtown by the Massachusetts Cultural Council in 2013). Our cultural corridor includes institutions such as the Lynn Museum/LynnArts, Raw Art Works, Cultura Latina Dance Academy, Centerboard, The North Shore Caribbean American Organization, and the School of Rock among others. With the support from residents and artists near and far, the arts and culture have become a central component of Lynn’s identity.

Our project aims to revitalize the Downtown for the enjoyment of residents, businesses, and visitors. Beyond Walls will brand Lynn as an attractive city in which to live and to visit. From lifelong Lynners to new arrivals, to fans of the city near and far, everyone knows that Lynn's time for action is NOW!

How you can help REVITALIZE LYNN!

Our project needs the interest and energy of supporters like YOU, the residents, project fans, and supporters of LYNN. We need YOUR help to realize the vision that so many Lynners said tops their list -- creating a beautiful, safe, vibrant and artistic downtown, one befitting the people and culture of Downtown Lynn.

The timeline for this project is quite short, with funds raised by May 22nd and the installations slated for the summer of 2017. All of these matching funds will go to the physical installation of the artwork, sculpture, and lighting. All donations are tax deductible.
