Revitalizing Detroit's North End

The Michigan Urban Farming Initiative is an all-volunteer nonprofit based in Detroit's North End that is innovating to revitalize the neighborhood. We are creating the America's first sustainable urban agrihood that features a new Community Resource Center, a healthy food cafe, two-acre urban farm, 200-tree fruit orchard, children's sensory garden, and more. BorgWarner jump started our crowdfunding effort with a $10,000 donation to support the campaign!

The Project

We are rehabilitating a long-vacant three story former apartment complex across from our urban farm into a Community Resource Center giving residents and visitors a community gathering space that offers educational and nutritional programs, event and meeting space. Construction is managed by Integrity Building Group with a budget of  more than $1 Million to give new life to the building.

We are on our way to creating one of the most sustainable and energy-efficient buildings in Detroit. The new Community Center will feature some of the most innovative building materials and systems available today.

We are also planning to repurpose an abandoned greenhouse and transform it into a healthy food cafe and food incubator debuting a hyper local eatery featuring fresh, farm-to-table food with ingredients from MUFI's urban farm. The cafe will be located adjacent to the Community Center on vacant land. Both are scheduled to open in 2017.

Positively Impacting Residents

The North End of Detroit is a food desert. Our urban farm gives residents easy access to fresh vegetables at no cost. More than 2,000 households, Churches, food pantries and others within two-square miles of the farm currently benefit from free, healthy produce.

We are expanding our impact by introducing a new Community Center and healthy food cafe.  The new Community Center will offer residents education programs and training opportunities. The new Cafe will provide residents a low-cost option for prepared foods with farm fresh ingredients.
